Let't not forget, "Hank the Cowdog" by Erickson....
I've tried to read East of Eden a few times. Let me know if you think it should be on the link of suggested books because it's one of the few books I've thrown away.
I really liked East of Eden. It's a classic, one of the only Steinbeck novels that I liked.
But anyways, I think a good book you should read is Sacred Games by Vikram Chandra. It's about the mafia in India.
